Title: The effectiveness of a web-based individual coping and alcohol intervention program for children of parents with alcohol use problems: an RCT.

Presenter: Dr Tobias Elgán, Centre for Psychiatry Research (CPF), Karolinska Institutet & Region, Stockholm, Sweden

Description: Children whose parents have alcohol use problems are at an increased risk of several negative consequences, such as poor school performance, an earlier onset of substance use, and poor mental health. Although many would benefit from support programs, only a small proportion is reached by existing support. Digital interventions can provide readily accessible support and potentially reach a large number of children. We developed and tested a novel digital therapist-assisted self-management intervention, targeting adolescents whose parents had alcohol use problems, aimed at strengthening coping behaviours, improving mental health, and decreasing alcohol consumption in adolescents. Only 24% (24/101) of the participants in the intervention group completed the intervention and we found a small but inconclusive effect of the intervention. They presented these findings and discussed their implications of how digital interventions to reach a vulnerable, hard-to-reach group of adolescents could be taken further
