Key Work Areas

• The international 5-Step Method: an intervention to help family members who have a relative with an addiction problem. Developed the Accreditation and Quality Assurance systems for the 5-Step method, developing criteria and methods to accredited practitioners, trainers in the method, and assessors of other practitioners and trainers. Also the main International Assessor for this scheme, and one of the main international trainers in the 5-Step Method. Developed online videos and self guided learning. I am also a qualified Counsellor.

• National Health Service: Held a number of Director-level positions in the NHS, including Director of Primary Care Bristol, Director of large-scale Projects, Interim Chief Operating Officer/Director of Development for West of England Academic Science Health Network, Director of Health Promotion. These projects involved developing financial, governance and organisational systems, service design/ delivery, commissioning and procuring services, reviewing quality of services.

• Major international research and training programmes: Developing project management systems for major research and training programmes in University of Newcastle, Australia; National Addictions Workforce Organisation, New Zealand; Sangath, Goa, India; National Family Support Network, Republic of Ireland.

Career History March 2011 – Present:

  • Part Time Self Employed Senior Consultant - Velleman Consultancy Ltd • 5-Step Method: Development of quality framework/on-line resources/training materials for practitioners, assessors and trainers; and assessing their competencies for working with families with addiction problems Working as the Lead International Assessor and Trainer. Delivered training in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, India, England – Received excellent feedback.
  • Visiting Research Fellow- Bath Spa University.
  • Project Consultant for Sangath (a large Non-Governmental Organisation in Goa, India, recognised by the UK Research Councils in 2015 as India's 4th leading Public Health Research Institute). Run courses on: traIning people to become trainers, project management, interviewing skills. Developed project management systems for major research projects, and systems to train and develop staff.
  • Project Consultant for Matua Raki, the New Zealand Department of Health National Addictions Workforce Organisation. Developed project plan for National New Zealand- wide programme of 5-Step Method counselling work and its evaluation across New Zealand. Undertook initial training of first cohort of practitioners, trainers and assessors. Currently advising and implementing systems to ensure New Zealand is self-sufficient to take programme forward.
  • Interim Chief Operating Officer/Director of Development for West of England Academic Science Health Network. Reviewed all business operating systems (e.g. finance and budget; development of performance/metrics; governance; performance reports for Senior Executive Team).
  • Project Consultant for University of Newcastle, Australia to develop a programme for family members affected by a relative’s drug use - developed project plan and trained staff to update and use plan to track all work.
  • Co-Investigator of major research project: a review of thirty years of Research Awards given out by Alcohol Education Research Council / Alcohol Research UK and the development of future metrics. • Management Consultant to review commissioning of Bristol specialist dental services.
  • Member of Bristol Consultancy and Coaching. Delivered training to NHS Managers on management and coaching skills.
  • March 2004 - Feb 2011: Director of large scale Projects, Bristol Primary Care Trust Project Director and Directorial level lead on a wide range of review, service development and re-design, commissioning and procurement projects.
  • May 2002 - March 2004: Director of Primary Care, Bristol South and West Primary Care Trust • Responsible for leading primary care development for the PCT. This included managing the implementation of the new General Medical Services contract, leading on the development of estates, leading on the development of GP practice data systems, managing Primary Care Support Services and leading on the National Service Frameworks for Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetes. • Managed senior staff who led on clinical governance, public involvement and operational services. • Corporate management responsibility included leading on Health and Safety, devising the annual work programme, contributing to induction and training programmes, research and development committee. • Management of 400 staff and £10 million budget.
