Families and Addiction on The Alcohol 'Problem' Podcast
Prof Richard Velleman Talks The Alcohol ‘Problem’ Podcast
AFINet Treasurer and Trustee Professor Richard Velleman recently joined Dr James Morris on The Alcohol ‘Problem’ Podcast to discuss how addiction affects families, and why family members deserve support and recognition in their own right. Read Richard’s reflections on the conversation and listen to the podcast below.
“I was delighted to be invited by Dr James Morris to appear on The Alcohol ‘Problem’ Podcast to discuss an issue that has been central to my work for many years – how addiction affects families, and why family members need understanding and support in their own right.
Our conversation explored many of the themes that have shaped AFINet’s work since its inception. We discussed the often hidden impact of addiction on partners, parents, children, siblings and other family members, and the reality that many experience significant stress, strain and ill-health while receiving little support themselves. We also talked about why it is so important to move beyond viewing families simply as a resource to help the person with the addiction, and instead recognise that they have their own needs and deserve evidence-based support.
It was a pleasure to reflect on how our understanding of these issues has developed over the years, including the research that led to the Stress–Strain–Information–Coping–Support (SSICS) model and the development of the 5-Step Method. We also discussed the value of compassionate, non-judgemental conversations and signposted listeners to the practical help that is now available for affected family members through professional services, voluntary organisations and peer support.
The podcast is aimed at both professionals and members of the public and provides an accessible introduction to why supporting families matters. If you would like to listen, you can find the episode here: The Alcohol ‘Problem’ Podcast episode. Please feel free to share it with colleagues, students and anyone interested in improving support for families affected by addiction.
The podcast reflects many of the principles that underpin AFINet’s work and our continuing commitment to improving understanding, research and support for families affected by addiction. We hope it helps raise awareness of the vital role families play and the support they themselves deserve.
