Research Associations (ICARA) in collaboration with the Department of Psychology at the University of Johannesburg will hold a webinar on 30 April 2021 on the subject of COVID-19 and its impact on addiction science.

An international group of authorities from Africa, Latin America, Europe and the USA will provide perspectives on:

  • Challenges and adaptations precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic for clinical, biological, and social research.
  • Research opportunities precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Implications of COVID-19 for policy related to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, gambling and behavioral addictions.
  • Global needs for addiction research in the era of COVID-19.

The Webinar “Pandemic Perspectives: Addiction Science in the Era of COVID-19” will be held via Zoom on 30th April 2021, at 14:00-16:00 GMT/ 16:00-18:00 SAST.

The webinar will be chaired by Prof. Tom Babor, University of Connecticut, and speakers are:

  • Bronwyn Myers, Chief Specialist Scientist, South African Medical Research Council
  • Maristela Monteiro, Senior Advisor on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)
  • Florence Baingana, Advisor to WHO
  • Jennifer Gonzalez, Senior Director of Population Health, Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, Dallas, Texas
